Hyderabad: Forty-four pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana who were stranded for four days at the Indo-China border during their pilgrimage in Kailash Mansarovar have been airlifted.

The pilgrims were stranded due to inclement weather. They were part of a tour that was organised by a private travel agency, Southern Travels. The incident came to light when video recordings of the pilgrims started doing the rounds on the internet. The pilgrims had requested the government to airlift them and get them to a safe place.

Many complained of breathing problems and that the rough weather was taking a toll on health.

One of the pilgrims complained that the agency had collected lakhs from them for the tour, but failed to provide shelter and safety at the time of the distress.

A government official told a leading daily that helicopter services have been pressed into action to rescue the pilgrims. The passengers have been airlifted to Kathmandu, and he assured that they will be sent back home soon.
