Tribal Man Dies in IED Blast at Karregutta Hillocks in Mulugu

A tribal man died after an improvised explosive device (IED), allegedly planted by Maoists, exploded at the Karregutta hillocks in Mulugu district.

The deceased was identified as Madakam Nageswara Rao (60) from Nugur village in Venkatapuram mandal. He had gone into the forest with five others to collect bamboo.

According to reports, the group was returning home when Nageswara Rao accidentally stepped on a pressure bomb. He was seriously injured in the explosion.

The others tried to carry him back to the village using a makeshift stretcher. However, he died on the way before reaching home. The incident took place at Bedemgutta, around 10 km from the village.

Police reached the village after receiving information and started an investigation. Officials are also checking the route taken by the group to search for any other explosives that may be present in the area.

The incident has once again raised safety concerns at the Karregutta hillocks, which have been opened to the public as part of tourism promotion. Similar landmine incidents were reported in the area in the past.
