October 28 Bank Holiday 2025: Banks Closed in Bihar and Jharkhand for Chhath Puja

As the Diwali holidays have come to an end, people across the country are now celebrating Chhath Puja, marking yet another important holiday in the festive month of October. With so many holidays falling back-to-back—from Navratri, Vijayadashami, and Diwali to Lakshmi Pujan—many are wondering whether October 28, Tuesday, is a bank holiday or a regular working day.
Bank Holiday Status on October 28
According to the official RBI bank holiday calendar, the bank holiday status differs from state to state, depending on regional festivals and traditions. Today, banks in Bihar and Jharkhand are observing a holiday on account of Chhath Puja (Morning Arghya). However, banks in other parts of India will remain open and continue their regular operations.
Even though a bank holiday has been declared in these two states, customers can still carry out transactions through online banking, mobile banking, UPI, and ATMs. These services remain unaffected by bank holidays, allowing users to send money, check balances, and pay bills without interruption.
About the Chhath Puja Holiday
Chhath Puja is a major regional holiday celebrated with great devotion in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The festival is dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, where devotees offer prayers to the setting and rising sun. It is observed as a time of gratitude, purity, and blessings for good health and prosperity. For many families, this holiday is one of the most significant and spiritually uplifting days of the year.
Upcoming Bank Holidays in October
There’s one more bank holiday left this month. On October 31, 2025, banks in Gujarat will remain closed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Apart from these regional holidays, as per the RBI rules, banks across India remain closed on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. These regular bank holidays provide employees with time to rest and observe local festivities.
Services During Bank Holidays
Even during bank holidays, most essential banking services are available digitally. Customers can use internet banking, UPI, mobile apps, and ATMs for most of their financial needs. However, physical services like cash deposits, cheque clearances, and demand draft requests will resume once the holiday is over and branches reopen.
