Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice, is expected to be celebrated across India on Thursday, May 28, 2026. The festival holds immense religious importance in Islam and is observed by millions of Muslims around the world with prayers, charity, and community gatherings.

The announcement comes following the sighting of the crescent moon linked to the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. According to religious authorities, the moon was not sighted on Sunday, May 17, but was later sighted on Monday, confirming the start of the holy month and aligning Bakrid celebrations with May 28 in India.

Importance of Dhul Hijjah in Islam

The sighting of the crescent moon marks the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This sacred month is considered one of the holiest periods in Islam and also coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are especially significant for Muslims. During this period, devotees engage in:

  • Special prayers
  • Fasting
  • Charity and donations
  • Religious gatherings
  • Spiritual reflection

Bakrid is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah and commemorates the devotion and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

Why Bakrid Dates Change Every Year

Since the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the dates of Islamic festivals vary each year in the Gregorian calendar. Eid-ul-Adha is observed approximately 10 days later each year compared to the previous year.

The exact festival date depends on the sighting of the crescent moon in different countries, which is why celebrations may vary slightly across regions.

Hajj Pilgrimage and Eid-ul-Adha

The holy month of Dhul Hijjah also marks the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, one of the five pillars of Islam. Millions of pilgrims from across the world travel to the holy city every year to perform religious rituals during this sacred period.

Eid-ul-Adha celebrations begin soon after the completion of the major Hajj rituals.

Bakrid Celebrations in India

On the occasion of Bakrid, Muslims gather at mosques and Eidgahs for special prayers. Families prepare festive meals, exchange greetings, and distribute food and charity among the needy.

Traditional dishes, acts of kindness, and community bonding remain central to the celebration of this important Islamic festival.
