Kerala Declares Holiday in Six Districts for Thai Pongal on January 15

Pongal is one of the most significant festivals for the Tamil community, symbolising gratitude to nature and the harvest season. Acknowledging its cultural importance, the Kerala government has announced a local holiday in six districts as part of the Thai Pongal celebrations.

The holiday will be observed on January 15, allowing government offices, educational institutions, and public establishments in select districts to remain closed. The districts covered under this announcement include Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, and Wayanad.

Although Pongal is primarily associated with Tamil Nadu, several regions in Kerala have a strong Tamil population and deep cultural ties with neighbouring areas. The decision reflects the state’s recognition of these traditions and ensures that people can observe the festival without work-related interruptions.

Importance of Thai Pongal

Thai Pongal marks the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai and is celebrated as a harvest festival. It honours the Sun God, farmers, cattle, and nature for prosperity and abundance. Families prepare the traditional Pongal dish using newly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery, which is offered during prayers before being shared among relatives and neighbours.

Homes are cleaned and decorated with colourful kolams, and families come together to participate in rituals that emphasise unity and gratitude. The festival is usually celebrated over four days, each carrying its own cultural and spiritual meaning.
