Vice President Election To Be Held On August 5, Results The Same Day

New Delhi: The new Vice President of India will be elected on August 5 and results will be declared the same day.

The term of Vice President Hamid Ansari expires on August 10. His successor will be chosen by all 790 Members of Parliament including Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Tthe Election Commission (EC) released the schedule on Thursday. "After consultation with Centre, EC has appointed Shamsher Sharif (Secretary General of Rajya Sabha) as returning officer for VP polls," said N Zaidi, chief election commissioner.

The last date for filing nominations for the election is July 18, the EC added.

The election is held with a secret ballot.

On July 17, national and state legislators will vote for the new President of India. The government's candidate is Ram Nath Kovind of the BJP would face the opposition's Meira Kumar. The results will be declared on July 20, three days after voting, but the BJP, with its allies and the support of regional parties, stands to secure more than 60% of the vote.
