Ballari: K N Renuka Pujar, a 27-year-old transgender person, has made history by becoming the first transgender person to be appointed as a guest lecturer at Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Karnataka. Pujar, who completed her post-graduation in Kannada from the university, joined the Kannada department at the Nandihalli campus (PG centre) earlier this month.

"I'm very happy. After a lot of struggle, I have reached this stage. The university has been a great support to me," Pujar said. She completed her degree in 2018 and transitioned in 2017 while in her second year of studies. After finishing her MA in Kannada in 2022, Pujar started working as a guest lecturer. She also acknowledged the support of her parents, who come from an agricultural background and always encouraged her to pursue education.

“The faculty at the university supported me when I was admitted and during my MA studies. I love teaching, and I hope to pursue a PhD and become a professor. I want to encourage other transgender people to follow their educational dreams,” Pujar added.

Out of 30 candidates who applied for the guest lecturer position, Pujar stood out due to her qualifications, good marks, and strong performance in the lecture, according to university officials. This appointment is seen as a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and diversity in education. It is believed to be the first such appointment at a university in Karnataka.

Pujar's success serves as an inspiration to other transgender people, showing that with education and support, they too can achieve prominent roles in society. The appointment highlights the importance of creating opportunities for marginalized communities in higher education.
