Hyderabad: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has sealed several restaurants included popular ones for unhygienic conditions for putting customers health at risk. Notably, even big eateries have come under the scrutiny in the last 20 days and the SCB officials have sealed them too for failing to meet food safety norms.

In one such case, a popular restaurant was sealed by the SCB for badly maintaining the kitchen which was next to the toilet. Astonishingly, there wasn’t even a partition between kitchen and the toilet.

It may be recalled that a popular restaurant Grill 9 in Kharkhana was sealed on October 26 following poor unhygienic conditions. Apart from oily soot on walls, rats were also found and moreover they were running without obtaining trade license from the SCB.

Incidentally, in one of the restaurant the workers were given the small room to live out attached to the kitchen-cum-store room.

"A separate dining hall, kitchen, storeroom, washing place for utensils and parking facility should be maintained by food joints," said SCB sanitation superintendent M Devender.

Devender also said that the fine ranges from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh for restaurants flouting the norms, adding that, the licenses will only be renewed if the managements fall in line.

Ironically, the officials have conducted surprise check after a period of five years. Earlier the surprise checks were conducted every month. However, many people say that the checks should not be intermittent which is jeopardizing customers health.

Earlier, Popular sweet shops Agra Sweet House, Delhi Wala Sweet House and Bangalore Iyengar Bakery were sealed for unhygienic conditions.
