Chittoor: Unable to bear dowry harassment from in-laws, a newly-wed woman committed suicide within four months of her marriage. The incident took place on Pypalyam, Kuppam.

According to the police, the deceased Sandhya (18) and Velu got married four months ago. They had been in love. Since they both belong to the same caste, the family members accepted their proposal. But after the marriage, Velu started harassing his wife for extra dowry. Recently, he harassed her to bring Rs 50,000 to purchase a bike. A dejected Sandhya attempted to commit suicide by consuming pesticide.

Sandhya's family members learned of the matter and shifted her to a private nursing home for treatment. Later, the doctors suggested to them to take her to Tirupati for better treatment. On Sunday, she died while on her way to Tirupati. When they returned to the village, Velu jumped from the ambulance and escaped. Sandhya's relatives came to Pypalyam and destroyed Velu's house and also burnt the other house. The Kuppam police came to the spot and brought the situation under control. Based on a complaint given by the Sandhya's family members, the police filed a dowry case and started the investigation. After conducting autopsy, the police handed over the body to the family members on Sunday evening.
