Dowry Harasment Drives Newlywed Woman To Suicide In Guntur

A newlywed woman committed suicide here on Monday at Pedapulipaka, Penamaluru.

Guntur: A newlywed woman committed suicide here on Monday at Pedapulipaka, Penamaluru. The deceased, Anusha (20) was married to Matta Srinivas of Ibrahimpatnam on June 28. They lived at Kondapalli and the husband worked at Autonagar.

Though Srinivas took dowry at the time of marriage, his parents forced him to demand more money. He started suspecting his wife and also harassed her which would often lead to to arguments and end up in ugly fights.

On Monday night, Anusha called her father and pleaded with him to take her back with him. Due to her wish, Seshaiah brought her to Pedapulipaka on Tuesday. She went to her bedroom to take a nap. When she didn't come out of the room even after evening, her parents found that she was hanging to a fan. Based on a complaint given by the victim's father, the police filed a case against Srinivas, Nirmala and Lazar.

Recently, in a similar incident, a woman committed suicide by hanging herself at Anna Nagar, Chennai. The deceased Jaya Sri (26) got married to Saravanan (35) in 2016. He worked at a jewellery shop and took 70 gms of gold at the time of marriage as dowry.

From the early days of her marriage, she was being harassed for extra dowry by her husband and in-laws. Meanwhile, she delivered a stillborn baby. The depressed woman went to her father's house.

Her parents convinced her and made arrangements for het to stay separately from Saravanan's parents. She left a suicide note stating that the reason behind her death was her husband and her in-laws and gave it to her parents. 13 days ago, she delivered a boy. She informed her father that her in-laws were harassing for more dowry. Then her father went to her house and asked her to come with him. Jaya Sri pretended that she had some work in the house and sent her father back.

She hanged herself to a ceiling fan and committed suicide. Kasimedu police learned of the suicide and reached the spot and sent the dead body to government hospital for post-mortem. The victim's father went to police station and stated that his daughter was killed by Saravanan's family and they were covering it up as a suicide. He added that Jaya Sri was harassed for extra dowry. He demanded justice and filed a case against Saravanan's family.
