Andhra Pradesh Leads In Crimes Against Women
Visakhapatnam: Crimes against women in the state are reaching alarming levels in some parts of Andhra Pradesh. About 40 complaints on an average, are lodged on a daily basis, in the state, according to the police reports. Most of them are with regard to harassment and outraging a woman’s modesty.
In 2017, a total of 10,704 cases of crime against women were filed in the state between January and September, as per the police reports. In 2018 while it is 10,891 in the same period, 5,196 cases were those of harassment and 3,947 cases come under outraging of modesty.
A senior official of the police department, said that as the registration of FIR is simplified, the number of crimes against women will be reported in large numbers. Efforts put in must be more to counter crimes against women, he added.
As per data of the AP police, Guntur district stands first in the reporting of crimes against women with 1,025 cases, while next in the list are Prakasam with 894 cases and Krishna district with 887 cases, as of now this year, according to......
The cases range from financial gain to cheating and outraging the modesty of women, sexual exploitation and personal motives.
Reporting of workplace harassment against women is on the rise in urban and rural areas in the state, added leaders and activists of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA).
Most Cases on ''false promise of marriage’
AP police data recently revealed that over 45 per cent of the total rape cases registered across Andhra Pradesh in the past two years pertain to accusations of sex under ‘false promise of marriage’.
The AP police data reveals that in 2018 (January to September), AP recorded 739 rape cases while it was 751 in 2017 in the same period. Of the total 739 rape cases in 2018, 45 per cent (339) of the rape cases were related to ‘false promise of marriage’ while 242 cases were actual sexual assault, 137 cases were booked under elopement and 21 cases came under consensual relationship.
