Amaravati: Overturning the decision of the past TDP government, the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government restored the ‘general consent’ to the Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday enabling it to carry out its investigations in Andhra Pradesh. The said provision was annulled in November 2018 by the then TDP government accusing the top investigating agency of working at the behest of BJP to settle political scores with TDP.

The order issued by the Home department on Thursday said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 (Central Act No.25 of 1946) Government hereby Cancel the Orders issued in G.O.Ms. No.176, Home (SC.A) Department dated.08.11.2018 with immediate effect.”

As a rule, the CBI needs permission of the local state governments to enter and carry out any investigation in a particular state. Delhi is the only exception as it falls under the National Capital Region.

After a string of investigations and raids carried out by Income Tax and CBI officials on TDP senior leaders, the Chandrababu Naidu-led government issued orders cancelling the ‘general consent’ to CBI which existed thus far. The move, back then, invited lot of criticism from across the country, questioning the TDP’s attitude as to why it feared probe if its leaders were free from corruption and had nothing to hide.
