Hyderabad: Due to the heavy rainfall, the city experienced on Friday, roads were blocked for hours resulting in the public rushing to the Metro Rail for the commute. The Hyderabad Metro Rail previously held the record of 2.89 lakh passengers utilizing the service within a day.

The record has now been broken with the Metro Rail witnessing the highest footfall of 3.06 lakh passengers on Friday in Hyderabad.

Heavy rains in the city, especially in the areas such as Hitech City, Durgam Cheruvu, and in Madapur on Friday evening, have left the vehicles stuck in traffic for hours. Ola and Uber services were stalled for several hours. Some software companies also canceled regular bus and car services. IT employees and others traveled on the metro. In view of the congestion, officials have run special trains from Hi-Tech City to Nagole, extending the time and ran the last train till 11.45 pm.

The Metro Rail is growing in popularity. As a proof of this, the number of commuters on the metro is increasing from 8,000 to 10 thousand every week, said Hyderabad Metro Rail MD NVS Reddy. He informed that a large percentage of people are opting for smart cards to avoid the need for a ticket and standing in queues every time.
