Khammam: The activists ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the opposition Congress clashed at Govindrala village in Bhadadri-Kothagudem district on Saturday creating a panic situation in the village.

At least six people suffered injuries in the clashes. Yellandu MLA Banoth Haripriya, who recently joined the TRS after quitting Congress visited the village to campaign in support of TRS MPTC candidate L Sunitha in the district for the Kamepalli seat in the ongoing rural body elections in the state. However, the Congress workers in the village, who worked for months to ensure the MLA's win started raising slogans against the legislator for defecting to TRS within a few months of winning in the Assembly elections.

They attempted to stop the campaign vehicle which resulted in the local TRS activists getting into a huge confrontation with them. Demanding Haripriya to quit the MLA post and get elected afresh, the Congress activists stated that the legislator cheated the people who voted her as the Congress candidate and hence, owes them an explanation.

Stones were pelted at the vehicle in which MLA Haripriya was traveling which caused the window panes getting damaged.

Chaos erupted with both the party activists throwing slippers and stones at each other, which also injured bystanders.

The police officials, present at the region were unable to control the situation following which additional forces were deployed to bring normalcy. Meanwhile, MLA Haripriya reportedly left the village without campaigning following the chaos.

The injured are currently undergoing treatment at the government hospital in Yellandu.
