The Secunderabad assembly constituency in the undivided Hyderabad district was represented by caretaker minister and TRS leader T Padma Rao Goud in the recently dissolved Assembly. In 2009, actress Jayasudha created sensation by defeating sitting Sanath Nagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav.

Later, in an unexpected turn of events, the TDP swapped its candidates for Sanath Nagar and Secunderabad constituencies for 2014 polls. While Koona Venkatesh Goud lost to Padma Rao Goud by 25,979 votes in Secunderabad, Talasani Srinivas Yadav emerged victorious in Sanath Nagar. This time around, the Congress fielded Kasani Jnaneshwar Mudiraj while BJP fielded Satish Goud opposite Padma Rao Goud.

The Secunderabad Cantonment assembly constituency in the undivided Hyderabad district is reserved for the Scheduled Castes. Sitting MLA G Saianna won as a TDP candidate by a thin majority of 3,275 votes in 2014, over the then TRS candidate Gajjela Nagesh. After Saianna's joining the TRS, the Congress party pinned hopes on senior leader Sarve Satyanarayana in the upcoming polls.

Sarve Satyanarayana had a strong competitor for the Cantonment seat within his party in the form of Krishank Manne, a student leader who played a key role in the Telangana agitation. Krishank happens to be Sarve Satyanarayana's son-in-law. After much hype and uproar over the Congress ticket in the constituency, it all turns out to be a tough contest between the Congress and the TRS. Satish Goud is the BJP candidate from the constituency.
