Hyderabad: Scores of stray dogs were beaten up mercilessly by residents of Sahara Estates in LB Nagar, on Sunday.

The incident sparked outrage among animal lovers who immediately informed the animal welfare department. According to Animal welfare officer Pravallika, several dogs were bleeding profusely due to the injuries and her timely arrival prevented a mass killing of the animals. The officer, later, lodged a complaint with the Vanasthalipuram police.

The officer decried the act of the residents and said that the colony residents took the matter too far despite the fact that all the stray dogs in the area were vaccinated and put them through birth-control procedures. Police said that they will inquire into the incident and see if those responsible for inflicting cruelty were hired goons or residents of the community.

Meanwhile, animal lovers said that such incidents will continue to rise unless people of gated communities do not adopt a more humane approach towards the stray dogs. “The man-animal conflict will continue to rise because dogs find the colonies an easy place to find food. Instead of thrashing or using violent means against the stray dogs, residents could first avoid dumping waste on the streets, secondly they can involve the community in vaccinating the dogs and encourage the setting up of dog shelters,” the animal lovers suggested.
