Ahmedabad: The Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has a way of finding himself in the news. The spotlight is on him yet again with his claim that that the BJP and RSS brigade would kill him. It may be noted that Jignesh remarks come after Y category security has been demanded by certain Dalit groups.

Not to be left far behind, he said, "I also have the same feeling as (VHP leader) Pravin Togadia. The fascist forces are capable of killing anyone. There is a threat to my life as well. The BJP and RSS can kill me, and as per my sources, they definitely want to eliminate me,” an English daily quoted Jignesh. The Y category security consists of 11 security personnel including eight commandos.

Nearly, 30 memorandums by various Dalit groups were submitted to the collectors across the state demanding Y security for Jignesh. The independent MLA backed by the Congress won Vadgam seat defeating the BJP candidate. Jignesh has stormed on to the centrestage of national politics with the Congress and other opposition parties backing him, and right wing groups accusing him of hobnobbing with anti-national forces.

A day ago, Jignesh sparked controversy after he demanded the removal of mic of an English TV channel at a press conference in Chennai. "We were arranging the microphone. As soon as he saw microphone that had our logo, he asked us to remove it. I told him we want a general byte and not an exclusive. But he refused", the reporter said.

As soon as the incident went viral, social media was flooded with comments supporting Chennai media for boycotting the event. A veteran media person told Sakshi Post that mediamen usually close their ranks and the trend of leaving a journalist to fend for himself when a politician, celebrity or his followers turned on him, was recent and almost unheard of in earlier days. "Though it was called a dog-eat-dog profession even during the days of Frank Moraes, Durga Das and Giri Lal Jain, journalists back then stood by one another," he said.
