Protests continue over Kashmiri student's suicide

Protests continued for the second consecutive day Monday at English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Hyderabad over the suicide of a Kashmiri student, an official said.

The proctor has been booked for abetment of suicide.

Protesting students demanded action against proctor Harish Vijra for the suicide of Mudassir Kamran.

Tension prevailed at EFLU campus in the Osmania University Monday as students gathered outside the administration block, raising slogans against the vice-chancellor and demanding immediate arrest of the proctor. Police tightened security to prevent any untoward incident.

Twenty-nine-year-old Kamran, hailing from Pulwama district of Kashmir, hanged himself in his hostel room late Saturday.

Police said quarrel with roommate Vasim Slaim, a native of Pune, drove Kamran to suicide but the students blamed the proctor for creating conditions for the suicide.

On a complaint by representatives of students' groups of EFLU, Osmania University Sunday booked the proctor for abetment to commit suicide. However, no arrests have been made in the case.

EFLU vice chancellor Sunaina Singh also announced probe by a panel comprising the faculty and students. She said the panel would also go into all aspects including the allegations by a section of students against the proctor.

She said the university authorities made all the arrangements to send Kamran's body to his home town. Terming the incident as unfortunate, the vice-chancellor assured that the university would provide aid to the victim's family.

According to police, Kamran and Salim, both Ph.D students were friends and roommates for a long time but fell out with each other due to difference over some issue.

Salim had complained to the university authorities about the alleged physical and mental harassment by Kamran, following which Vizra issued him a memo and later called the police. On March 1, the two students were brought to police station, where Salim gave a written complaint.

Sub-Inspector of Police Madhusudhan Reddy counseled both the students and warden Vedasharan also gave an undertaking that he will look into the matter and sort out the differences, police said.

However, on Saturday evening Kamran's room was found bolted from inside and on suspicion when the door was broken open, Kamran was found hanging.

The students' groups accused proctor of abetting the suicide by allegedly abusing Kamran and taking the issue to police when it could have been solved in the university.

Some student leaders alleged that the proctor had always had discriminatory attitude towards students based on their region and religion.
