Bengaluru: After a hotel in Hyderabad denied room to a woman traveler for being single, a couple in Bengaluru was denied a room as the man and wife belong to different religions. Divya DV and her husband Shafeek Subaida Hakkim from Kerala landed at Olive Residency on Annipuram Main Road in Sudhama Nagar on Tuesday. To their chagrin they were denied room by the staffer as one was Hindu and the other Muslim.

Even upon insisting that they were married, the staffer didn’t budge and refused them accommodation. He alleged that he had instructions not to give rooms to inter-faith couple as problems may crop up from them.

"He noted the names in the register and then realized that I am a Muslim, while my wife is Hindu. He asked us if we were married as we follow different religions. When I confirmed that we were in fact married, he refused to give us a single room saying that it is not acceptable for a Muslim and a Hindu to stay together," Shafeek said.

The staffer justified his act stating that couple's of inter-faith had committed suicides and they don’t want to face any trouble.

Shafeek said that they couldn’t argue with the staffer as his wife had an interview and they were running out of time, thus walked away. But he underlined that he will take up the issue with the Kerala Human Rights Commission.

Recently, 22-year-old artist Nupur Saraswat was denied an accommodation by the Hotel Deccan in Hyderabad upon knowing that she was a single traveler. She posted her ordeal on Facebook, "So, I am standing outside a hotel in Hyderabad which didn't let me stay because they realized I was a "single lady" even after confirming the online booking. Yup, massive bag in hand, gross from the journey - just standing outside the hotel. Somehow they decided I was safer on the streets than in the hotel. Funny huh, how patriarchy works?”
