Hyderabad to Get Three New Major Railway Terminals: Nagulapalli, Jukkal, Dabilpur

In a move to decongest Hyderabad’s overcrowded railway stations, the South Central Railway (SCR) has unveiled plans to build three major suburban terminals around the city. These new hubs will cater to the growing passenger traffic from various states and help manage long-distance train operations more efficiently.

Similar to major metros like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata that already have dedicated suburban terminals, Hyderabad will soon have three new ones strategically located between the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR).

Three New Terminals Planned

A terminal at Charlapalli, on the Warangal route, is already operational. The Railway Board has now prioritized three additional projects:

Nagulapalli (Ramachandrapuram Mandal, Vikarabad–Mumbai line)

Jukkal–Shamshabad (Mahbubnagar–Bengaluru route)

Dabilpur–Medchal (Nizamabad–Nanded line)

These proposals were formally presented to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy during a review meeting held on Thursday.

Congestion at Existing Stations

At present, Secunderabad, Nampally, and Kacheguda stations are operating beyond capacity. With limited platforms and rising traffic, passengers—especially those from the outskirts—often spend more than an hour just reaching these stations. The new terminals are expected to significantly reduce congestion and improve accessibility for travelers from suburban areas.

Proposed Infrastructure and Capacity

According to SCR estimates:

Nagulapalli Terminal will span 325 acres with 20 platforms, 14 pit lines, and 24 stabling lines, designed to handle 2.32 lakh passengers and 325 trains daily.

Jukkal Terminal will cover 300 acres and include 18 platforms, 12 pit lines, and 20 stabling lines, catering to 2.08 lakh passengers and 250 trains a day.

Dabilpur Terminal will come up on 250 acres with 14 platforms, 10 pit lines, and 14 stabling lines, accommodating 1.62 lakh passengers and 575 trains daily.

Meeting Future Demand

With Hyderabad’s population projected to surge from 1.13 crore in 2025 to 1.84 crore in 2031 and 3.30 crore by 2047, railway officials say the new terminals are designed to meet future urban expansion and the increasing demand for inter-state travel.

Once completed, the three suburban terminals will not only decongest central city stations but also provide faster, smoother, and more efficient travel options for lakhs of daily commuters across the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region.
