February 11 Poll Day: Paid Holiday for Employees, Schools and Colleges Shut

With municipal elections set to be held today, February 11, the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) has issued key instructions to ensure maximum voter participation. As part of these measures, the commission has decided to declare a local holiday in all municipal areas where polling will take place.
Holiday Announced to Encourage Voting
The SEC has directed district collectors to declare a holiday on polling day within the concerned municipal limits. Officials said the move is aimed at making it easier for voters to cast their ballots without any work-related pressure and to improve voter turnout.
Offices and Institutions to Remain Closed
The holiday will apply to government offices, local bodies, cooperative institutions, and public sector undertakingslocated in polling areas. This step is meant to support the smooth conduct of elections and allow employees to exercise their voting rights.
Schools and Colleges Closed on February 11
As many schools and colleges will serve as polling centres, both government and private educational institutions will remain closed on the day of polling. Authorities have been instructed to take possession of these buildings in advance and complete all election-related arrangements.
Private Sector Employees Also Covered
Special focus has been placed on employees working in the private sector, including IT companies, industries, and business establishments. Employers have been asked to give sufficient time — and paid leave if necessary — so that staff members can vote without any difficulty.
Strict Monitoring by District Collectors
District collectors will closely monitor the implementation of the holiday. The commission has warned that action will be taken against organisations that force employees to work on polling day or prevent them from voting.
Push to Improve Urban Voter Turnout
Noting that urban areas usually record lower voter turnout, the SEC said the holiday decision is aimed at encouraging more citizens to visit polling booths.
The State Election Commission has appealed to voters to treat polling day as a civic duty and actively take part in the democratic process, calling elections a true “festival of democracy.”
