It was a close call for Ramagundam MLA Makkan Singh Raj Thakur’s family, who were reportedly holidaying in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, when a massive earthquake struck.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook Thailand and Myanmar, claiming at least 23 lives. A state of emergency has been declared in both countries as the earthquake left a trail of destruction. A 30-storey building collapsed like a house of cards in Bangkok, trapping around 43 workers. According to reports, three people have died in Bangkok, while 20 were killed in Myanmar.
While Raj Thakur is in Hyderabad, it has been reported that Thakur’s wife, daughter, and son-in-law were in Thailand when the tragedy struck. Fortunately, they are safe and have reportedly relocated to the airport.
The powerful earthquake also sent tremors through India’s northeastern states of Manipur and Meghalaya. According to the National Center for Seismology, East Garo Hills in Meghalaya experienced an earthquake around 1 pm, measuring 4.0 on the Richter Scale. In Manipur, residents immediately evacuated their homes upon feeling the tremors.
Expressing concern over the situation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to stay in contact with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand. In a post on X, Modi wrote, “Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, I have asked our authorities to be on standby.”
