Bangladesh Bans IPL Telecast After Mustafizur Rahman Controversy

In a dramatic development that has stirred international cricket, the Bangladesh government has ordered an immediate suspension of Indian Premier League (IPL) broadcasts across the country. The move comes amid rising diplomatic and sporting tensions following the exclusion of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad ahead of the 2026 IPL season.

Mustafizur, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers and a familiar face in the IPL, was widely expected to be a key component of KKR’s plans. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly directed his removal from the squad, a decision that authorities in Dhaka say was taken without any clear explanation. The development has triggered strong reactions from fans, officials, and policymakers in Bangladesh.

In an official communication, the Bangladesh government stated that the decision by the Indian cricket board had deeply hurt public sentiment in the country. The statement noted that the lack of transparency surrounding Mustafizur’s exclusion caused widespread disappointment and anger among cricket followers. As a result, the government instructed broadcasters to immediately stop airing all IPL matches and related programming until further notice, citing public interest and approval from the appropriate authorities.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken the matter to the international level, urging the International Cricket Council (ICC) to intervene. On January 4, 2026, the BCB formally informed the ICC that it would not send the national team to India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to begin on February 7.

Bangladesh has requested that its World Cup fixtures, which were originally planned to be held in Mumbai and Kolkata, be shifted to Sri Lanka. According to BCB officials, the request is based on concerns over player security and a loss of confidence following recent developments.

Cricket observers warn that the situation could lead to a prolonged freeze in cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh, similar to the long-standing separation between India and Pakistan in bilateral cricket.
