On 15 November 2025, Rohini Acharya stunned the political world when she declared, “I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family … This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do … and I’m taking all the blame.” With that message on X, she stepped away from her role in family politics and signalled a dramatic break from the dynasty of her father, Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Rohini is one of the daughters of Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, and until recently stayed mostly away from the spotlight despite coming from one of Bihar’s most influential political families. Her announcement came just a day after the party she belonged to, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, suffered a major electoral defeat in the state assembly elections, a timing that many believe underscores deeper family and party fractures.
In her statement she held out two names: Sanjay Yadav, a member of the party who is known to be a close aide of her brother Tejashwi Yadav, and Rameez, both of whom she alleged asked her to take the public step. While Sanjay Yadav’s role within the party and family has been the subject of earlier internal disputes, the reference to “Rameez” is less clear and has triggered speculation about other hidden dynamics.
Rohini’s exit raises serious questions about loyalty, leadership and the internal unity of the RJD and the Yadav family. It signals a potential turning point in how political families in India manage succession, internal dissent and public perception. For now, Rohini has taken a firm personal decision, and the ripple effects are only beginning to unfold.
