Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is celebrated every year on February 19 to honour the birth anniversary of the great Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Founder of the Maratha Empire, he is remembered for his bravery, visionary leadership and administrative excellence. Crowned as Chhatrapati in 1674, his legacy continues to inspire generations across India.

In Maharashtra, the occasion is observed with immense pride and enthusiasm. The day is a public holiday across the state, including Mumbai, with several institutions remaining closed.

Public Transport and Essential Services

Despite the holiday, public transport services in Mumbai will function normally. BEST buses, local trains, taxis and auto-rickshaws will operate as per regular schedules. Metro services are also expected to run without disruption.

Essential services such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and emergency response units will remain open throughout the day to ensure uninterrupted medical care.

Government Offices and Banks Closed

All government offices, including municipal departments and state-run institutions, will remain closed on February 19. Banks across Maharashtra will also observe a holiday in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India’s official calendar. Customers are advised to use online banking facilities or plan branch visits in advance.

Schools and Private Offices

Government schools and colleges will remain shut for the day. However, private educational institutions may follow their own schedules, so students and parents are encouraged to confirm with their respective institutions.

Private companies and businesses may either close or continue operations depending on internal policies.

Celebrations Across Maharashtra

The birth anniversary is marked with cultural programmes, rallies and grand processions. Devotees participate in events featuring traditional music, dhol performances and patriotic tributes in cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Kolhapur.
