History of Indian Air Force Day

The Indian Air Force was raised as an auxiliary unit under British rule on October 8, 1932, and was originally known as the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF). Its first operational squadron was formed on April 1, 1933, comprising six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys.

The RIAF earned its “Royal” title in 1945 for its distinguished service during World War II. However, after India attained independence in 1947 and became a republic in 1950, the prefix was dropped, and the force came to be known simply as the Indian Air Force.

IAF’s Role in Major Conflicts

The IAF has been at the forefront of some of India’s most decisive military operations, including:

• Indo-Pak Wars of 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999 (Kargil War).
• 1962 Sino-Indian War against China.
• Operation Poomalai (1987) during the Sri Lankan civil war.
• Operation Safed Sagar (1999) during the Kargil conflict.

Beyond warfare, the IAF has consistently carried out humanitarian and disaster relief operations both within and outside India.
