Over 100 flights were delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Friday morning due to technical problems with the air traffic control system.
Sharing a passenger advisory at 8:34 am on X (formerly Twitter), the Delhi Airport said, “Due to a technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, flight operations at IGIA are experiencing delays. Our team is actively working with all stakeholders, including DIAL, to resolve it at the earliest.”
Passengers were further advised to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused,” the post read.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) also shared a post on X explaining the cause of the delays.
In a post at 10:08 am, the AAI said, “Flight operations at Delhi Airport are experiencing delays due to a technical issue in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), which supports Air Traffic Control data. Controllers are processing flight plans manually, leading to some delays. Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all passengers and stakeholders.”
According to FlightRadar, the average delay was around 50 minutes.
The flight delays caused severe inconvenience to passengers. It may be noted that the Indira Gandhi International Airport handles around 1,500 flights per day.
This comes just two days after the airport authorities announced that operations had returned to normal following a similar technical issue earlier in the week.
On Wednesday, the Delhi Airport had posted an update stating, “Be aware that all operations are back to normal, and passengers can proceed with their travel plans as usual. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time. Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight updates.”
