Yellow-coloured Level 2 Advises Americans to Exercise Increased Caution in India Travel

The US is believed to have released four travel advisories for India so far this year, and has maintained the same low Level 2  for its citizens wanting to visit the country since March 28. The American travel advisories published by the Department of State are now widely divided into four separate color-coded categories ranging from 1 to 4, with one (white) being the safest area to travel and four (red) being the no-travel zone suggested for its residents. The yellow-colored Level 2 travel advisory for India has been in effect since March 28 of this year, when the State Department reduced it from the Level 3 travel advisory issued on January 24.

In Level 3, the United States advises its people to rethink travelling to that specific country. The travel advice for India has been generally Level 2 and, on occasion, Level 3. At the peak of the COVID-19 crisis in April 2021, it was classified as Level 4. For all practical reasons, the final three travel advisories issued this year  March 28, July 25, and October 5  are similar in nature and content, indicating that the coronavirus situation in India has now normalised. The United States issues travel advisories based on a number of factors.  Among these include the country, public health issues, law and order, terrorism, relationship with that country, and travel season.

India’s neighbors Afghanistan and Myanmar are classified as Level 4, while Pakistan and China are classified as Level 3.

Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, and Sri Lanka are in Level 2 alongside India, but Bhutan is in Level 1, where the US advises its people to take customary precautions while travelling.
