Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, brought to the limelight how makhana can become another massive crop with which India can dominate the world. Makhana, also commonly referred to as fox nuts, is viewed as a superfood as it holds extraordinary nutritional content and lots of health benefits.
Having India as the main producer, contributing to a significant proportion of global production, the crop has become very viable for farmers. Bihar, with flood-prone soil, has recently emerged as a strong contender in makhana cultivation.
The demand for makhana has increased with the potential health benefits of keeping the heart in good condition and maintaining sugar and weight. Thus, international market prices go up to ₹13,000 per ton.
However, this industry is affected by cultivation and export issues. Only 2% of the makhana seeds meet international quality standards; hence, better cultivation practices are required along with export quality.
Government incentives and more recent technological advancements have helped to offset most of these difficulties, and makhana production has increased. This starchy mushroom holds great promise of becoming a global brand and India one of the leading producers and exporter.
As Kamath pointed out in his tweet, makhana is an exciting opportunity for healthy-conscious consumers and still has a massive growth potential. With the appropriate investment and help, the market for makhana can develop, which shall benefit farmers, consumers, as well as the economy.
