Mumbai, with its cosmopolitan culture and hectic life, is usually regarded as a safe place for citizens. But recent controversy over Bigg Boss 18 contestant Edin Rose has created questions regarding the city's safety.
Edin, who has been based in Mumbai since 2020, shared a traumatic incident on social media about a situation she encountered with a friend while travelling. The actress said they were followed by a drunk driver in a Jaguar, who tracked them for close to 20 minutes, bringing immense distress to them.
Edin narrated the scary experience, saying, "A drunk man in a Jaguar chased us for 20 minutes, weaving on the road. He kept following us wherever we went. My rickshaw driver stopped, and this man stopped in the middle of the road, then accelerated, did a U-turn, and came back around until I finally stopped near the Juhu police station."
Edin showed her shock and fear, pointing out how the man's behaviour not only threatened their safety but also indicated that he was not going to stop. "This man not only put everyone on the road at risk but also ensured that we knew he wasn't going to stop, even when we took his face and his number plate," she stated.
With the man's number plate, Edin was able to track his name and Instagram account. While she was tempted to air him publicly, she chose to leave the matter in the hands of the authorities. "From his number plate, I accessed his name and registration online. I even located his Instagram profile. As much as I want to share it here, I think it's best to leave this to the law," she said.
Edin's ordeal comes as a harrowing reminder of the risk of violence to which women are subjected in society. She asked her audience to ask themselves how likely it would be for a girl younger than themselves or a returning workwoman to be the attacked victim. "This time it was me and my friend, we are outspoken and can defend ourselves if needed. But what if it was a younger girl coming from work or any other woman? What if she never made it to the police station?" she asked.
Edin's strong message reflected the importance of change in society, calling for parents to educate their sons about how to conduct themselves in public. "Instead of instructing your daughters not to be outside, why don't you instruct your sons on how to conduct themselves in public? Mumbai is a very safe city, and I had never experienced anything like this before today," she finished.
Edin's bravery in speaking out about her experience has generated a debate on safety in Mumbai, and it is hoped that her case will act as a wake-up call for the authorities to take the required action to ensure citizens' safety.
