Nandamuri Balakrishna returned to theatres with Akhanda 2, the latest action drama directed by Boyapati Sreenu. The sequel, which released on Friday (December 12) in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam, arrived with high expectations following the strong reception of the first part. However, despite the wide release and pre-existing buzz, the film has largely drawn negative reviews, with critics calling it a disappointing sequel weighed down by predictable writing and excessive reliance on formula-driven mass elements.
Day 1 Box Office Performance
Early estimates from Sacnilk indicate that Akhanda 2 collected approximately Rs 30 crore worldwide on its opening day, including paid previews. While the numbers reflect Balakrishna’s ability to pull crowds, the negative word of mouth may impact its weekend trajectory.
Language-wise collection estimates:
• Telugu: Rs 29.5 crore
• Hindi: Rs 1 lakh
• Kannada: Rs 4 lakh
• Tamil: Rs 35 lakh
• Malayalam: Rs 1 lakh
The film’s revenue has come almost entirely from the Telugu market, with other versions performing poorly; an indication of its limited appeal outside the home state.
Can Poor Reviews Hurt Its Momentum?
Despite opening ahead of Balakrishna’s recent release Daaku Maharaaj, Akhanda 2 appears to have benefited largely from the actor’s loyal fan base rather than genuine audience enthusiasm. The opening-day numbers reflect an initial rush driven by brand value and pre-release hype, not sustained positive reception.
The bigger challenge lies ahead. With largely negative reviews and weak word of mouth spreading quickly, the film risks a steep decline in collections over the next few days. Trade analysts suggest that unless there is an unexpected turnaround in audience response, footfalls are likely to drop sharply after the initial fan-driven shows. Even the ongoing festival season may not be enough to cushion the impact, as repeat viewership looks uncertain. If current trends continue, Akhanda 2 could struggle to maintain momentum beyond its opening weekend.
