September is an important month for Assam students with half-yearly examinations on the cards and significant breaks to relax and celebrate culture. Schools in the state schedule holidays during this time to enable students and teachers to take part in popular festivals and enjoy some time off after a hectic academic routine.

School Holidays in September 2025

Assam schools will have a number of holidays in September 2025. The first school holiday is on 12th September, and it is the Tirubhav Tithi of Sri Sri Madhabdeva, a religious festival of cultural significance in Assam. Then, schools will remain closed on 22nd September for Mahalaya, which is the start of Navratri, a celebration of Goddess Durga and the worship of divine feminine forces.

The holidays resume with Saptami on 29th September and the principal Dussehra/Navratri holidays from 30th September to 2nd October 2025. Holidays have been planned to provide students and teachers an opportunity to engage in local celebrations and home events.

Cultural Significance of the Holidays

Assam's Navratri is basically a celebration of Goddess Durga and her forms. The devotees, on these nine nights, think that the Goddess comes down to give her followers power, prosperity, and protection. Among the specific practices of Assam's Navratri, Kumari Puja is one, where girls between 5 and 9 years are worshipped as the embodiment of the divine Mother. The practice emphasizes the regard and honor towards womanhood in Assamese society.

Community pandals and artistic Durga idols become the focus of celebration. People assemble for aarti and devotional bhajans, surrounded by traditional drums and cymbals, creating a pious mood. Cultural programmes consisting of Assamese folk dances such as Bihu and Sattriya add to the festive mood, blending devotion with beauty.

The holiday season ends with Bijoya Dashami (Dussehra), which celebrates Goddess Durga's triumph over Mahishasura. Idols are submerged in rivers or ponds, representing her going back to heaven, and farewell is said by communities with prayers and festivities.

Importance for Students and Teachers
These planned holidays give the students a precious respite from studies, allowing them to rest, travel, and engage in religious and cultural activities. Teachers, too gain a similar respite, taking time to refresh and involve themselves in school activities for the rest of the term.

By scheduling school holidays during festivals like Navratri and Dussehra, Assam allows students to balance school duties with cultural engagement, so that they get both education and cultural enrichment.
