Why Stock Market Is Down Today? Key Reasons Behind Sensex, Nifty Fall

23 Mar, 2026 10:01 IST|Sakshi Post

The Indian equity markets began the week on a weak note on Monday, tracking a broader decline across Asian markets. Rising geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran, along with elevated crude oil prices, triggered a risk-averse sentiment among investors.

In early trade around 9:20 AM, the BSE Sensex dropped by over 1,300 points, slipping to 73,143.86. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 declined by more than 440 points to 22,673.95, reflecting widespread selling pressure.

What Dragged the Markets Down?

1. Surge in Crude Oil Prices
One of the key reasons behind the market weakness is the sustained rise in crude oil prices. Global oil benchmarks continue to trade at elevated levels, with Brent Crude hovering above the $110 per barrel mark.

For India, which heavily depends on oil imports, higher crude prices can have multiple negative effects. These include rising inflation, pressure on the rupee, and an increase in the current account deficit. Expensive oil also raises input costs for companies, impacting profitability.

The widening price gap between Brent crude and US oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate has added further complexity to global energy markets.

2. Continued Foreign Investor Outflows
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have remained consistent sellers in Indian equities throughout March. The ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and weakening global cues have led to significant capital outflows.

So far this month, foreign investors have pulled out over ₹90,000 crore from Indian markets. Concerns about relatively lower returns in India compared to other global markets have also contributed to this trend, putting additional pressure on benchmark indices.

3. Spike in Market Volatility
Investor nervousness is clearly visible in the volatility index. The India VIX, often referred to as the market’s fear gauge, surged nearly 10% to cross the 25 mark. A rising VIX indicates heightened uncertainty and expectations of sharp market swings.

4. Escalating Geopolitical Risks
Tensions in West Asia have intensified, with threats of potential disruptions to key energy supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Any escalation in the conflict could severely impact global oil supply, further driving prices higher and affecting global markets.

5. Weak Global Market Trends
Asian markets also witnessed sharp declines, with indices falling significantly amid growing concerns over prolonged geopolitical conflict. The negative sentiment globally has spilled over into Indian markets, leading to broad-based selling across sectors.

Additional Pressure Points

Apart from the major factors, a few other concerns are weighing on investor sentiment:

  • Rupee Weakness: A weaker currency increases import costs and can deter foreign investments.
  • Inflation Worries: Rising oil prices could push inflation higher, limiting the scope for interest rate cuts.
  • Earnings Uncertainty: Companies may face margin pressure due to rising input costs and global slowdown fears.

Market Outlook

The near-term outlook for the market remains cautious. Investors are likely to keep a close watch on global developments, especially geopolitical tensions and crude oil movements.

Volatility is expected to remain high in the coming sessions, with global cues continuing to play a major role in shaping market direction. Until there is clarity on the geopolitical front and stabilization in oil prices, markets may remain under pressure.
