January 15 Holiday for Indian Stock Market as BMC Elections Take Place

Trading on the Indian stock market will remain suspended on January 15, 2026, as elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are scheduled to take place on the same day.

Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed in observance of the polling day in Mumbai. The holiday has been declared as part of election-related arrangements, as the BMC is India’s richest civic body and the elections involve extensive administrative deployment across the city.

Normal trading activity on equity, derivatives, and other market segments will resume on January 16, 2026, following the conclusion of polling.

The closure is in line with standard practice during major civic and state elections in Mumbai, where a public holiday is declared to facilitate voter participation.
