Global Market Update
Gold prices have retreated by around 10% from their record high of $4,381.21 reached on October 20, as the U.S. dollar climbed to a near three-month high.
“There’s a lack of upside momentum in gold due to technical factors, and the dollar’s resilience continues to weigh on the metal,” said Kelvin Wong, Senior Market Analyst at OANDA, according to Reuters.
The U.S. Federal Reserve recently cut interest rates by 25 basis points on October 29, marking the second rate cut this year. As per the CME FedWatch Tool, traders now see a 71% chance of another rate cut in December, down from over 90% before Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s comments.
Since gold is a non-yielding asset, it tends to perform better in low-interest-rate environments and during periods of economic uncertainty.
