For some time now, there have been reports that banks in India will soon follow a five-day workweek. Recently, this topic has resurfaced, with speculation that all banks across the country might adopt a five-day work schedule starting in April 2025.
In response to these rumors, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) recently clarified that there is no truth to this news. PIB also advised people to check the official Reserve Bank of India (RBI) website for accurate information. A tweet related to this clarification has gone viral online.
As of now, the RBI has not made any official announcement about banks shifting to a five-day workweek. Currently, banks remain open on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of the month, while the second and fourth Saturdays are holidays. However, some banking unions have been demanding reduced working hours.
Apart from national and regional holidays, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. On the first, third, and fifth Saturdays, banks remain open. All banks are closed on Sundays.
A news report by Lokmat Times claims that starting from April, banks across the country would operate 5 days a week, following a new regulation issued by @RBI #PIBFactCheck
