IMD Predicts Widespread Rains and Isolated Heavy Showers Across Andhra Pradesh on Friday

November 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Tirupati and Nellore districts for Friday, November 29, 2024, as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in these areas due to the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.

In a bulletin released at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 28, 2024, IMD Amaravati Director S. Stella indicated that South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema would experience 'fairly widespread' rainfall on November 29, while scattered rains are expected in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The district-wise forecast for Friday shows that Tirupati and Nellore are likely to receive isolated extremely heavy rainfall, prompting the red alert. Chittoor and Annammayya districts are expected to receive very heavy rainfall and have been issued an orange alert. Prakasam, Sri Sathya Sai, and YSR districts are under a yellow alert.

For Saturday, November 30, 2024, Prakasam, Tirupati, and Nellore districts remain under orange alert, while other Rayalaseema districts are placed under yellow alert.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has urged farmers to take precautions to protect their crops. APSDMA Managing Director Ronanki Kurmanath advised farmers to support horticultural crops with stakes and safeguard harvested paddy, as light to moderate rains are expected to persist in the coastal districts until December 1.

Meanwhile, the IMD’s morning bulletin on Thursday, November 28, 2024, reported that the deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, located around 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, 320 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 410 km southeast of Puducherry, and 490 km south-southeast of Chennai as of 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours. It is expected to continue moving north-northwest, skirting Sri Lanka’s coast, and will cross the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram around November 30, 2024, as a deep depression.
