At last, the Jahnavi's family has secured a massive financial settlement from the City of Seattle.

Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old graduate student of Telugu origin from Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh, lost her life on January 23, 2023, after being struck by a speeding Seattle police patrol vehicle. The officer behind the wheel, Kevin Dave, was reportedly driving at 74 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone while responding to an emergency call when the collision occurred. The impact proved fatal, and Jaahnavi died at the scene.

The tragic incident sparked widespread outrage, not only among the Telugu and Indian communities but also across the United States. Questions were raised about excessive speed, police accountability, and the value placed on civilian lives in high-speed emergency responses.

Jaahnavi’s grieving family filed a lawsuit against the City of Seattle, seeking justice and accountability for her untimely death. In a major development, the city has now agreed to a settlement of $29 million — approximately ₹232 crore — in compensation to the family. The payout marks one of the most significant financial settlements in a case involving a pedestrian fatality linked to a police vehicle in recent years.

Despite the scale of the tragedy and the public outcry, the officer involved did not face felony criminal charges. He was fined $5,000 and suspended from duty, a disciplinary action that drew criticism from many who felt the punishment did not match the gravity of the loss.

While the financial settlement cannot undo the pain of losing a young life with immense potential, it represents a major legal victory for Jaahnavi’s family after a prolonged battle for justice.
