Visakhapatnam: The severe cyclonic storm Michaung has begun making landfall near Bapatla on Tuesday afternoon. The process of landfall is expected to complete during the next three hours. The landfall of cyclonic storm has triggered heavy rains in the coastal areas.
Heavy rains continue to lash Tirupati, Annamayya, Kadapa, Guntur, Nellore, Bapatla, Prakasam, Krishna and NTR districts. Strong winds with speeds of 100-110 kmph have uprooted trees and electric poles in some places along the coastline. The strong winds have also damaged the standing crops.
Several parts of Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra have been receiving incessant rains since Monday. Due to the inclement weather, 23 flights were cancelled at Visakhapatnam airport. Authorities in Bapatla have shifted people from low-lying areas near the coast to relief camps.
Chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who has been regularly monitoring the situation, held a virtual review meeting from the Camp Office. He directed the officials to take necessary steps to avoid loss of life and property as the strong winds continue to blow the coastal areas.

After reviewing the relief programmes, the chief minister directed the officials to restore the electricity in affected areas soon. He has also instructed the officials to provide compensation to the affected people within 48 hours in case of loss of people and livestock. The government has announced a financial aid ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 for evacuees while the compensation for fully damaged or partially damaged houses has been increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000.
Several senior IAS officers have been dispatched to eight rain-affected districts for overseeing the relief operations. The state government has released Rs 22 crore for relief works. The authorities have set up 52 rehabilitation centers in Anakapalli which may accommodate over 60,000 people.
