NEW DELHI: Protests were held in the Parliament complex and elsewhere in the city and the country against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) which was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, December 9.

While Indian Union Muslim League MPs protested in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament premises, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) held protest at Jantar Mantar by holding placards and opined that the bill was against the idea of India.

AIUDF MP Badruddin Ajmal said that "We reject CAB bill as It is against the Constitution and against Hindu-Muslim unity."

Amit Shah had introduced the the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lower House of Parliament by Shah on Monday. The Bill seeks to give Indian nationality to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan facing religious persecution.

According to the proposed legislation, Indian citizenship will be given to the members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities, who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, till December 31, 2014 and facing religious persecution and they will not be treated as illegal immigrants.

Few people protested in different parts of the country over the introduction of the bill.

Citizenship Amendment Bill is strongly opposed by the people of Assam, people believe that this bill will nullify the provisions of the Assam Accord of 1985, which fixed March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date for deportation of all illegal immigrants irrespective of religion. Along with Assam people, Agartala and West Bengal people also protesting against the bill.

Protests were held in all the major cities of Assam and the shops were being closed in Guwahati after receiving a call for shutdown by various organisations which strongly opposing the bill.
