NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee meeting to decide on whether or not to support the Shiv Sena in forming a government in the state ended, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said on Monday. The party has called Maharashtra Congress leaders to Delhi to discuss further action, he told news agency ANI.

The meeting will be held at 4 pm today. All the 44 Maharashtra Congress MLAs have been huddled together in a Jaipur resort.

At the CWC meeting, party president Sonia Gandhi chaired the meeting with the top leaders, according to news agency PTI. The CWC is the highest decision-making body of the Congress.

After BJP opted out to stake claim to form government in Maharashtra, deliberations about the possibility of the Congress participating in government formation in Maharashtra started on Sunday after its long-time political adversary Shiv Sena was invited to form the government by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The Shiv Sena has time till 7.30 pm on Monday to stake claim.

It is also speculated that Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar may also meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday to discuss the possibility of the two parties supporting a Sena-led government.

In the 288 member Maharashtra assembly, the BJP secured 105 seats, while Shiv Sena with 56, Congress 44, and NCP with 54 seats.
