New Delhi: Technology giant HP will introduce 3D printers in the Indian market in the first quarter of 2018, a top company official said on Friday.

"We will launch our 3D printers in India in the first quarter of the calendar year 2018. We will focus on the commercial segment," HP India Managing Director Sumeer Chandra told reporters here. He added that the verticals with potential demand include the likes of automobile, healthcare and manufacturing.

3D printing refers to creation of a three-dimensional object in which layers of materials are formed with computers controlling the process. HP already sells these 3D printers in markets such as Japan and China. The 3D printing market, Chandra said, is estimated at about USD 5 billion globally and is growing at a healthy pace.

However, there are no estimates available for the Indian market. These devices will be imported from the global supply chain of the company. About pricing, Chandra said it is difficult to comment before the launch. Globally, the range starts at about USD 1,00,000, he said. Currently, the printers use plastic as raw material. However, HP has announced its intent to use metal and colours for the 3D printers in future.
