The day is named after St Valentine whose name is associated with third century Rome. There are several people asssociated with the name. However, the story goes that Emperor Claudius II banned marriage saying stags performed better on field rather than married soldiers. However, St Valentine opposed it and also helped soldiers secretly marry their loved ones. He was awarded death sentence for revolting against the same.

However, the pratice of marking 14 February as St Valentine's Day started only 200 years after his death

According to a news report,

“By this time Rome had become Christian and the Catholic Church was determined to stamp out any remaining paganism. A pagan fertility ritual was held in February each year and the Pope abolished this festival and proclaimed 14 February Saint Valentine's Day, thus establishing this feast day on the Catholic Calendar of Saints.”
