Small Change.... Big Worry...

Will Whatsapp help you in paying your hospital bill? If you ask Sukantho of Kolkata, he would emphatically say yes.

He got admitted to BG Poddar Hospital in Alipore of West Bengal due to dengue. He was to be discharged on Wednesday. But, the hospital management refused to take the demonetised notes. When the patient's relatives appealed to them consider their request, the hospital management demanded double the amount if it is paid in demonetised currency. All their appeals fell on deaf ears and the hospital management was unrelenting.

It was then one of Sukantho's relatives hit upon the idea of crowd-sourcing money. He sent out a message on his Whatsapp account requesting the people to give small change to get Sukantho discharged.

The message went viral and soon, those he knew and a lot more whom he didn't know came and gave small change. Some kids broke their kiddy banks and gave their savings to them. The amount given in small change was presented to the hospital. After initially refusing to accept the small change, the hospital management finally agreed as the police intervened.

It took a full four hours and four persons to count the change!
