Hyderabad: A Kachori seller in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh has come under the radar of Income Tax sleuths for tax evasion. Kachoris are popular snack in North India.

The Kachori outlet's owner Mukesh Kumar is said to have a turnover of around Rs 60-70 lakh. But, according to the officials he doesn't pay taxes. Located in Seema Talkies in Aligarh, his shop sees brisk sales throughout the day.

The special investigating branch (SIB) of commercial tax department (Aligarh range) found that Mukesh was earning in crores but he did not have GST (goods and services tax) registration.

Sleuths said that they had first conducted a recce by watching the customer turnouts in different timings. After making preliminary assessment, they got the search warrant on June 21.

In fact, Mukesh during questioning hinted that the turnover was in lakh.

The branch made the search after receiving a complaint from Lucknow. An official said that his turnover could well cross Rs 1 crore.

Rules note that till March 31, businessmen having a turnover above Rs 20 lakh were required to have registration for the GST but from April 1, the limit has gone up to Rs 40 lakh.

Officials fear that this is just the tip of the iceberg, and that there are big snack sellers who evade paying tax in Uttar Pradesh.
