Hyderabad: Woman Passenger Held With 11 kg Gold Hidden In Her Leggings

11.1 kg gold worth Rs 3.63 crore was recovered by the DRI team

Hyderabad: A 50-year-old woman was arrested at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) on Tuesday with 11.1 kg gold worth Rs 3.63 crore. The woman arrived from Dubai in the early hours of Tuesday.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials also recovered Rs 1.5 crore in foreign currency. The woman, who successfully passed through the customs check was intercepted by the DRI Team before she could exit the terminal.

During the search, the officials recovered gold biscuits weighing 11.1 kg and Rs Rs 4.25 lakh worth UAE dirhams and Singapore dollars. As per the details, the accused, who was clad in a burqa had concealed the gold and foreign currency in specially made cloth pouches and socks, which she pinned to multiple layers of leggings. This arrangement went undetected by even the hand-held metal detectors.

After recovering the gold and cash, the DRI team conducted a search at a five-star hotel in Gachibowli where the woman had been staying for the last three months. They recovered Rs 1.5 crore in US dollars and Saudi riyals from the safe in her hotel room.

The woman passenger, who hails from Hyderabad was arrested while the smuggled gold and foreign currency were seized under the Customs Act of 1962.

The officials suspect that the proceeds of the smuggled gold were being converted into foreign currency and then smuggling it out of the country in a similar fashion.
