Chennai: An auto driver was sentenced to two years' imprisonment by the Mahila court here. A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on him for abetting his wife's suicide.
According to the reports, Abbas, an auto driver, married Fathima on May 3, 2006. During the wedding, her family members gave Rs 15,000 and some gold jewellery along with household items, as dowry. Fathima used to live in her in-law's house at Venkateswara Nagar, Kodangaiyur along with her husband.
Right after the wedding, Abbas had been harassing his wife continuously for extra dowry. He used to ask for more gold jewellery and cash from Fathima's brother and also demanded a new auto and a mobile phone.
Unable to bear the harassment, Fathima set herself ablaze on February 22, 2007 around 6 pm. Though she was rushed to the hospital, she died the next day due to severe burn injuries. She died nine months after her marriage. Assistant Commissioner of Police, MKB Nagar range filed a charge sheet in the case and RN Manjula, the Mahila court judge said that marital cruelty is a serious offense. Fathima didn't live her life peacefully due to harassment from Abbas.
