Visakhapatnam: Nine people were killed in a ghastly road accident on the newly built 216 Highway Bypass near Chebrolu Kotalanka, in Gollaprolu Mandal, Visakhapatnam. The accident happened around three in the afternoon when the victimes were returning from a family function in Drivers Colony, Kakinada. A speeding tipper loaded with mud which was coming in the wrong direction, hit the auto in which they were travelling, killing six of them instantaneously.

Two others died on the way to the hospital and one more person died in the hospital. Out of the nine who were killed, seven of them were women and the two others were the driver and another male passenger. Eight of them were severely injured and are being treated in the Kakinada Hospital. They were all daily wage workers who were from G.Venkatapuram village near Narsipatnam in Visakhapatnam.

Kakinada DSP Ravi Varma and Pithapuram CI Appa Rao and the local police team rushed to the spot. The injured were first rushed to the Pithapuram hospital in their police vehicles and later shifted to the Kakinada hospital in an ambulance. The District SP Vishal Gunni inspected the accident spot and instructed the local police to file a case on the contractors who were laying the 216 National Highway.
