New Delhi: In an effort to bridge the gap between the Central government and citizens, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a new app that will allow mobile phone users to connect with website of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The launch of new PMO app is marking two years of MyGov portal launch. Modi launched the MyGov portal in 2014.

As on Saturday, it showed 3.53 million registered users and 3.4 million comments in 590 discussion threads. A team of young engineering students from Delhi Technical University developed the PMO app.

After launching the new PMO app, the Prime Minister Modi spoke about the concept of citizen engagement. Before his speech, the Prime Minister distributed awards to the winners of competitions held on MyGov. The day-long programme has four sessions and panel discussions around the “Do, Discuss and Disseminate” theme before the Prime Minister’s address, according to MyGov Chief Executive Officer Gaurav Dwivedi.

Participating in the fourth session titled ‘Disseminate,’ Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said: “Social media is an empowerment tool,empowering every individual both giving and receiving information. It is also an accountability tool.”

Top ministers and senior government officials engaged with the people on the panel discussions. Inaugurating the session, IT Minister Ravishankar Prasad asserted that the government wants to interact directly with citizens. “Digital India is the destiny of India and digital democracy is essence of India,” he said.

Around 2000 people were present on the occasion. MyGov Twitter account has 4,25,000 followers.
