Amaravati: With water being released copiously from upstream reservoirs on the Krishna river, inflow into the Srisailam reservoir in Andhra Pradesh has been steadily increasing since Thursday morning.

At the same time, the Godavari is also in spate, touching 7.5 lakh cusecs at Polavaram dam construction site, cutting off road access to at least 19 villages in the region, officials said.

Srisailam received 1,93,400 cusecs of water at 8 pm on Thursday, taking the storage level to 823.8 feet.

The full reservoir level at Srisailam is 885 feet.

The discharge at Almatti in Karnataka was 2.13 lakh cusecs and Jurala was 1.79 lakh cusecs.

The Dowleswaram barrage at Rajamahendravaram received an inflow of 7,38,511 cusecs Thursday night while 7,39,745 cusecs was being discharged into the Bay of Bengal.

West Godavari district collector R Mutyala Raju, who toured Polavaram area, said there was no threat to the cofferdam.

"The current inflow is 7.5 lakh cusecs and there is no problem till it surges to 12 lakh cusecs," he said.

He said 2,122 families in 19 villages in the Polavaram submergence area could also face inundation threat if the flood level increased.

"Right now the flood level is 26 metres and the threat of inundation occurs if it touches 35 metres. We are constantly monitoring the situation and taking all precautionary measures," the collector said.

Deputy chief minister (Health) A K K Srinivas, Revenue minister Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, Women Development minister T Vanitha and local MLA T Balaraju also toured the Polavaram region and requested people to cooperate with the administration and move to rehabilitation centres.

The deputy chief minister said instructions have been issued to the district administration to supply 20 kg rice to each family in 'submergence villages.'

Medical teams with required vaccines and medicines have also been kept ready. (PTI)
